General Feeding Advice
Adult Dogs and Cats:
Aim to feed 2-3% of your pet's ideal current body weight, ideally spread over 2 meals per day. For pets that need to put on weight or who have higher nutritional needs, increase the amount of each meal over a period of time until the optimum weight is achieved. If the animal needs to lose weight, reduce the amount fed per day.
You may wish to measure their portions until you get a feel for the proper amount.
Smaller dogs generally have a higher metabolism and may require slightly more, whilst larger dogs may require less.
The above is intended as a guide only - Feeding should be tailored to the needs of the individual pet. The activity level, age and size of your dog or cat will ultimately determine how much to feed them.
Puppies & Kittens
Should generally be fed to appetite from around 4-6 weeks until around 3-4 months of age, when you should be feeding 5-6% of the animal's ideal body weight for their age, spread over four meals per day, reducing to two meals as they reach 6 months of age.
As they approach maturity, start reducing the total daily amount to 2-3%, but still keep a careful eye on their weight and reduce or increase the portion size as required.
Remember - there are no hard and fast rules for feeding - every animal has a different metabolism and nutritional requirements, so feeding should be tailored to suit your pet.
Don't forget that exercise is essential, mentally and physically too!
